Overview
Nestled in the serene village of Triyuginarayan in Uttarakhand, this sacred temple is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married by Lord Vishnu. The eternal flame (Akhand Dhuni) that has been burning since that divine wedding makes this site one of the holiest destinations for couples seeking to sanctify their union.
Legends and Myths about the Triyuginarayan Temple
- The Eternal Flame (Akhand Dhuni)
It is believed that the sacred fire lit during the divine wedding of Shiva and Parvati still burns in the temple courtyard.
The flame is considered a witness to their union, symbolizing eternal love and commitment.
Couples often take home ashes from the fire as a blessing for marital bliss.

- The Three Sacred Kunds (Holy Ponds)
Where Lord Shiva took a bath prior to the wedding is known as Rudra Kund. Vishnu Kund: It is believed that Lord Vishnu took a bath there before playing Parvati’s brother. Brahma Kund: Where Lord Brahma is said to have performed ritual cleansing before officiating the wedding.
The water in these kunds is believed to have healing properties and never dries up.
Agni Kund – The very site where the wedding fire burned, symbolizing purity and eternal love.
Rudra Kund – Believed to have been used by Lord Shiva for his ceremonial bath.
Vishnu Kund – Where Lord Vishnu is said to have taken a ritual dip before giving away Parvati’s hand in marriage.
- Birthplace of Sacred Rivers
Triyuginarayan is said to be the source of the Mandakini, Alaknanda, and Saraswati rivers. Because of this, the temple is not only a popular location for weddings but also a source of divine waters that give life. Three Yugas of Existence
- The name Triyuginarayan means “The Lord of Three Ages” (Satya, Treta, and Dwapar Yuga).
The temple is believed to have witnessed all three yugas and will continue to do so through the Kali Yuga. Hence, the place is seen as timeless — eternal like love itself.
- Ashes for Fertility and Happiness
Local belief says that if newly married couples take a pinch of ashes from the Akhand Dhuni and keep it at home, they are blessed with prosperity, fertility, and everlasting happiness.
- The Celestial Guest List
Mythology says the wedding here was not just attended by Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, and Brahma — but also by all gods and sages of the universe.
This is why a wedding here is still believed to be witnessed and blessed by the divine.
