Depending on the official temple announcement and the weather, the Kedarnath Yatra is open from late April or early May until October or November each year. The sacred shrine at Kedarnath Temple is only accessible for about six months because of the heavy snowfall in the winter. Within this short window, the Himalayas transform beautifully — from snow-covered landscapes to lush green valleys and finally golden autumn hues. Each season offers a different spiritual and visual experience.

From May to mid-June, the beginning of the season:

The lingering snow on the higher peaks surrounds Kedarnath as the temple doors reopen following the winter. The Mandakini River flows powerfully with fresh glacial melt, and the air feels crisp and pure.
The early season carries a special spiritual excitement — devotees eagerly waiting for the first darshan of the year.

Highlights: Snow patches near the temple, bright sunshine, powerful river flow, fresh mountain air.

Best For: Devotees seeking divine energy of opening season, photographers, and travelers who love snow views.

Monsoon season from July to August (travel with caution)

Monsoon brings greenery and dramatic clouds to the valley, but it also increases the risk of landslides and roadblocks. While the temple remains open, travel can be unpredictable.
Misty mountains and vibrant greenery are highlights. Best For: Experienced travelers who are flexible with plans.

Mid-September to October: Golden Autumn – Best & Most Comfortable Time

Kedarnath experiences its most stable and pleasant weather when the monsoon stops. The sky becomes crystal clear, the mountains shine brightly, and the valley glows golden. This is considered the most comfortable and scenic period for the yatra.
Highlights include stunning photography conditions, clear mountain views, pleasant, cool weather, and less rain. Families, elderly pilgrims, and travelers seeking a tranquil and secure journey are the best candidates. Season of Closure (late October or early November) Temperatures begin to rapidly fall as winter draws near, and snowfall may begin. The temple prepares to close for the season, and the idol of Lord Kedarnath is moved to its winter seat at Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath.
As the last opportunity for darshan before the shrine closes for the winter, this time of year is marked by a calm and emotional atmosphere. Best For: Devotees seeking a quieter, deeply spiritual experience.

Mid-Season of Closure (late October or early November) Temperatures Time

Temperatures begin to rapidly fall as winter draws near, and snowfall may begin.

Bonus Insight:

For the best overall experience — comfortable weather, clear skies, and smooth travel — Mid-September to October is ideal.
For snow lovers and those who want to witness the powerful opening energy — May to early June is magical.
